Metrolink derailment
Date published: 30/06/2008
There is currently major disruption to Metrolink services following a tram derailment last night near the St Peter’s Square stop in Manchester city centre.
Tram services are continuing to run between Altrincham and G-Mex, and between Bury and Piccadilly, but passengers may face delays. Services to Eccles have been replaced with a bus service from Piccadilly Gardens.
Passengers can also use Metrolink tickets on the 33 bus service between Eccles and Stand P at Piccadilly Gardens. And a shuttle bus service is running between Whitworth Street West, near the G-Mex stop, and Stand R at Piccadilly Gardens.
The incident happened at 11.15pm last night and resulted in the poles which support the overhead power cable being damaged. One passenger was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch is currently at the scene and needs to complete its initial investigation before the tram can be moved. The overhead poles also need to be assessed and repaired.
Tram services are unlikely to return to normal for at least the next 24 hours while this work takes place. Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) will continue to provide regular updates throughout the day.
