School garden makeover for Bury Safe week of action
Date published: 26/06/2008
Members of the local community have teamed up with pupils from Whitefield Primary School to tidy the school's garden.
The work is taking place in preparation for the BurySafe Week of Action which will take place on the Victoria Estate from 21 July. The Police, Six Town Housing, the Fire Service and the council will help local residents make improvements to their area in a community 'Beat Sweep'.
During Beat Sweep everyone taking part will be based at the school so they thought improving the school garden was a good way of kick starting the project.
For the past week, pupils have been working with members of the Victoria Tenants and Residents Association and Groundwork Bury to renovate the school garden, clean the pond, reinstate flower beds, prune some trees and plant a new vegetable patch for the school to use.
The finished garden will provide a relaxing and attractive area to play study and work in for pupils, staff and visitors to the school.
Head Teacher, Maura McGoldrick explained: "The school garden was overgrown and in a very sorry state. It needed a complete tidy up and makeover so we were very pleased when Groundwork offered to help us and fund the costs. It has been really hard work but we can see the results and it has been worth the effort"
