Greater Manchester congestion charge

Date published: 10/06/2008

The Department of Transport has announced today that Greater Manchester's bid for money from the Transport Innovation Fund has been successful.

This means that Greater Manchester has been offered £2.8 billion to invest in public transport improvements over the next few years. A key condition of accepting this money is the implementation of a congestion charge in order to raise the additional funds required to complete the public transport plans.

An official consultation on the proposed scheme will commence in July and last for three months. The results of this consultation will be used in deciding the details of the proposed transport improvements and congestion charge and ultimately, whether Greater Manchester accepts the money.

The Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) will be posting an information pack to every business and household in the area , which will provide a more detailed explanation of the Transport Innovation Fund and congestion charge.

Over the coming weeks, the Chamber will be running a series of events to ensure that every business has the opportunity to see the detailed plans for public transport and the congestion charge and can question the key decision makers behind the proposals. Full details of the programme of events will be sent out shortly and posted on our website www.gmchamber.co.uk

In order to gather the clearest and most impartial view of business, the Chamber will be undertaking a survey of over 10,000 Greater Manchester companies. This will give Chamber members a prominent voice in these discussions.
