Short visits to Bury town centre
Date published: 01/07/2008
Bury Council are to alter the scale of charges for on-street pay and display
parking in Bury town centre. By 1 September 2008, motorists will be able to
park on-street free of charge for a period of up to 15 minutes.
Councillor Dorothy Gunther, Executive Member for Environment and Transport said
"quite a lot of residents visiting the town centre on a regular basis only need
to park for short periods to pay a quick visit to a cash machine outside a
bank, for example. In the past local people have complained that they have to
pay to park for short visits such as this. We have, therefore, taken these
views on board and responded by modifying our parking service to more
adequately meet the needs of local people."
To be able to park free of charge for 15 minutes, all that motorists need to do
is obtain a ticket from a pay and display machine by pressing the green
button. The machine will then issue a ticket for display on a vehicle.
To avoid being issued with a penalty charge notice, anyone that thinks they may
need to park for longer than 15 minutes should make sure they purchase a ticket
from the outset. This is because motorists will not be permitted to park for
15 minutes free of charge and then return to the vehicle to purchase a ticket
to extend their stay.
