Bury Council has appointed a new Head of Waste Management who joined the Environment and Development Services Department last month.

Glenn Stuart comes to Bury from Trafford Borough Council where he worked as Waste Manager for the last 8 years.  Prior to this he worked for Vale Royal and Doncaster Borough Councils, also in the field of waste management.

Bury's Head of Waste Management is responsible for a range of key front line services including rubbish collection, street cleaning, public conveniences, winter maintenance, abandoned vehicles and last, but not least, improving recycling performance.

Glenn also has responsibility for the long term strategic development of waste management in Bury.  This work is undertaken in partnership with the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority (GMWDA) and the other eight Greater Manchester councils that make up the partnership.   The GMWDA is currently in the process of procuring a new 25 year waste management services private finance initiative contract costing approximately £4 billion over the contract term.  This will see a network of new waste management facilities established across Greater Manchester and should achieve a 50% recycling and composting rate by the year 2020.  Glenn is heavily involved in this partnership ensuring that Bury's best interests are represented.

In his role Glenn faces the tough challenge of improving service delivery whilst driving costs down and reducing the burden on Council tax payers.   He also has the ongoing task of communicating with residents to keep them on board with recycling more, more often and encouraging everyone to do just that little bit more.

Glenn Stuart said "I have spent the last couple of weeks familiarising myself with what's what and I am excited about taking on such a challenging and rewarding role.  I am also keen to build upon the ongoing developments and improvements that have already been made.  There are a lot of key targets to be met over the next few years, particularly in relation to recycling.  As a team we will be working to improve  all areas of waste management, particularly the quality of service to the customer."

Councillor Dorothy Gunther, Executive Member for Environment and Transport said "I am delighted to welcome Glenn to Bury and feel sure his experience will be of great benefit to our town.  Glenn is joining us at an exciting time when reducing, re-using and recycling waste is a national goal.  I look forward to working closely with him to achieve our shared aim of continually improving waste management for the residents of Bury."

Glenn is married and lives in Greater Manchester at Astley,  Tyldesley.  He has worked in Waste Management since 1995 and started out his career upon leaving school as a Cartographic Surveyor for the Ordnance Survey where he remained for 7 years.

In his spare time Glenn enjoys holidaying in foreign parts having visited New England, USA during 2007 and when at home he likes to keep himself active by playing 5-a-side football.
