Date published: 17/03/2010

A CCTV image of a hammer-brandishing robber has been released after a Prestwich bookmakers was targeted.

Shortly before 9pm on Monday 8 March 2010, the offender burst into the William Hill Bookmakers on Middleton Road and threatened staff behind the security screen.

After repeated threats members of staff allowed the man behind the counter from where he stole cash.

On his way out the offender even tried to steal coins from the fruit machine, but gave up and left.

He is described as being a white man, 6ft 2in tall, between 25 and 30 years old, of slim build but with broad shoulders. He was wearing a grey scarf and dark hooded top.

Detective Inspector Lynne Vernon said: "This man terrified the members of staff, though thankfully nobody was hurt.

"Since this incident we have conducted a number of inquiries to trace the offender and now we believe that members of the public can help us identify him.

"We would urge anyone who recognises the man in the image to get in touch with us."

Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 0161 856 8210 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
