Netball teams invited to compete in charity tournament

Date published: 11/03/2010

Netball teams are being invited to take part in a special charity tournament in memory of a former senior police officer.

The tournament is being organised by Sergeant Cecelia Oakley from Greater Manchester Police’s Bury Division in memory of Chief Inspector Karin Mulligan who died after a battle with cancer last year.

Teams will travel from across the UK to take part in the competition which takes place at Bury Grammar School on Saturday 27 March. All money raised will be donated to Bury Hospice.

Chief Inspector Mulligan served with GMP for 28 years and rose from the rank of cadet to serve in various branches and divisions in the force including the mounted unit and Rochdale Division.

Sergeant Oakley – a longtime friend and netball teammate of Chief Inspector Mulligan - said: “Karin loved netball and was a fantastic player. She was the goalkeeper for GMP’s netball team and Salford-based team Kestral for more than 20 years. During that time she won lots of competitions and trophies and I am sure this tournament will be a fitting tribute to my friend and colleague.”

Anyone who would like to take part in the tournament or support the teams on the day can contact Sergeant Oakley by emailing cecelia.oakley@gmp.police.uk
