Waste collections get back to normal

Date published: 03/02/2010

Bury Council is advising residents that waste collections will return to normal from Tuesday February 9.

As a result of the severe weather, changes had to be made to the collections that particularly affected blue bin recycling collections. This was to allow collection crews to concentrate on clearing the backlog and dealing with the increase in waste.

Following a period of suspension, people can now once again put out their brown wheelie bins as well. Collections of brown bins (green waste) will restart again next week for all those due a scheduled collection.

Residents are reminded to refer to their collection calendar to check details of their next scheduled collection. Alternatively details can be checked online by visiting the Council’s web site or by phoning the customer contact team on 0161 253 5353.

Councillor Dorothy Gunther, executive member for environment and transport, said: “I would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused during this exceptional period of bad weather. The heavy snow made it impossible for our teams to safely continue with a normal service and I would like to thank residents for their patience during what have been extremely difficult circumstances. From next week everyone should their bins out as per their collection calendar on their normal scheduled day.

“I hope too that everyone will make an extra big effort to get back into the recycling habit and recycle as much waste as they can.”

To help with collections residents are advised to:

  • put their bins and bags out at the kerbside by 7am on their usual collection day
  • make sure bin lids are fully closed
  • put extra recycling that won't fit into the blue bin inside a cardboard box and place it next to the bin
  • keep their bins and bags clear of obstacles such as parked vehicles
