Quit smoking on No Smoking Day

Do you want to be one of the million people who quit smoking on No Smoking Day?
If you're in Bury, the local Stop Smoking Service will be on hand outside Jessops in the Millgate Shopping Centre on No Smoking Day between 10am and 4pm to help you kick the habit.

You can talk to the friendly team in confidence, and they can advise you about their services, give top tips for stopping and help you achieve your goals.

Free goody bags, packed with advice to help you along your smoke-free journey, and free and confidential advice and support are available for people who want to stub it out for good now or in the future.

The service can arrange for you to meet with a trained advisor who will help you put your plan to stop smoking into action, and keep you on track.

By quitting you’ll have a healthier lifestyle and a happier purse. Bury Stop Smoking Service also offer flexible appointments and group or individual support, as well as specialist support for pregnant women and young people.

International Women’s Day Events

A wide range of activities is taking place in Bury to mark International Women’s Day.

This year’s theme is “Equal rights, equal opportunities: Progress for all”, and events have been organised by Bury Youth Service, in collaboration with partner agencies.

The aim is to encourage young women to participate in safe, fun and educational activities. It also encourages young men to gain a greater knowledge and understanding of why the day is celebrated.

Wednesday March 10: Whitefield, at the Shuttle Centre – Equality though the ages. Provides young women with the opportunity to participate in some of the activities that young women from other generations would have been expected to participate in, showing how progress has developed. 

Radcliffe, at Ellen Court. We are currently running a 12-week healthy lifestyle programme. During this day Dr Khan from Fairfield Hospital is coming in to deliver a session to mothers and new mothers around women’s health. The purpose of the talk is to educate women and empower young women to make a conscious decision regarding their health. Dr Khan will cover areas on parental health, breast feeding, breast cancer awareness, cervical cancer screening and sexually transmitted infections.

Saturday March 13: Bury, at the Elton Centre. Encouraging young women to plan their challenges, events and activities for the forthcoming year which will provide equal opportunities for all. This event will be running from 11am to 3pm.

Lucy Wainwright Roche

Art and cookery are the latest Lunch and Learn sessions to be arranged through Bury Council’s Age of Opportunities initiative.

Come along to one of these courses:

* Playing with Clay – which runs on Thursdays (Feb 25, Mar 4, Mar 11 and Mar 18) from noon to 3pm at Whitefield Library.

* Drawing – on Fridays (Feb 26, Mar 5, Mar 12, and Mar 19) from noon to 3pm at Whitefield Library.

* Quick and Easy Meals – on Mondays (Mar 1, 8 and 15) from 7pm to 9pm at Bury Adult Education Centre.
